The Wall Street Journal, citing American officials, revealed more cautious estimates within the administration of President Donald Trump regarding the war with Iran, as senior White House advisors warned of the possibility of the conflict continuing until the end of his presidential term.
According to the newspaper, Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were among the officials who discussed this scenario with Trump during closed meetings in the Oval Office and the Situation Room.
The advisors informed the US President that Tehran may be able to continue to resist US pressure, which could prolong the conflict beyond Inauguration Day in January 2029.
These warnings reveal a discrepancy between the estimates presented within the US administration and Trump’s public statements regarding the possible duration of the war.
Trump said on Wednesday that he expected the war to end “immediately after” the US midterm elections in November, considering that Iran would not be able to continue the resistance for a longer period.
The US President indicated that the diplomatic path is still an option to deal with Tehran, but he stressed that it is not the preferred option at the present time.
