The Dutch Ajax Amsterdam midfielder affirmed, “Representing Morocco is the greatest honor in my football career. Since my first call-up 12 years ago, I have given everything I have for my country, and I wear the national team’s shirt with pride, and my love for Morocco, and everything this national team means to me, will remain the same and will never change.”
The player, who played 78 international matches with the Atlas Lions, revealed that making the decision was very difficult, adding: I do not find myself able to continue representing the national team under the leadership of the current coach, and therefore I declare that I am not ready to join the team as long as the coach remains in his position.
The 30-year-old explained in his statement, which he published on his official Instagram account, that he has not retired from international football and will not close the door to representing Morocco again.
Wehbe took over the technical responsibility of the Moroccan national team last March, succeeding Walid Regragui, but he was unable to lead the team to the World Cup semi-finals similar to the 2022 World Cup, and the “Atlas Lions” bid farewell to the last World Cup in the quarter-finals.
It is noteworthy that Mohamed Wehbe did not rely on Amrabat as a starter in the 2026 World Cup, as he participated in only 3 matches against Haiti as a starting player and as a substitute against Canada and France, and did not include him against Brazil, Scotland and the Netherlands.
