A senior Iranian security official revealed that Tehran intends to declare a “no-go zone” outside the Strait of Hormuz within the next few days, warning ships not to enter it.
Official media quoted the Secretary of the Iranian National Security Council as saying that the new zone will start from the US naval blockade line and extend to areas inside the Gulf.
The Iranian official warned that “any ship that enters this new prohibited zone will be added to the sanctions list,” as he put it, in a move that comes amid escalating maritime tension between Tehran and Washington.
Regarding internal affairs, the official touched on the repercussions of the sanctions and economic pressures imposed on Iran, denying rumors about the existence of a shortage of basic materials inside the country.
He said that talk about a shortage of basic goods as a result of sanctions and the economic blockade is “false,” as he put it.
The Iranian announcement comes at a time when the Strait of Hormuz and the waters surrounding it are witnessing escalating tension, with the continued US measures in the region and the heightened sensitivity of the movement of commercial ships through one of the most prominent sea lanes for global energy and trade.
