Kaisho Sano opened the scoring in the 19th minute, after passing the ball to Sheraldo Becker, who was alone on goal and shot it into the bottom corner.
Becker then turned to the role of playmaker, when he sent a low cross towards the far post, which Philip Moeni followed into the net, doubling the hosts’ lead before the end of the first half.
Mainz continued its advantage after the break, and Becker was present again in creating the third goal, after setting up the ball for Philipp Tietz, who successfully followed it into the goal.
Tietz returned to add the fourth goal after goalkeeper Hoyer Fernandez passed, before Ransford Yeboah Königsdorfer completed the scoring by scoring the fifth goal against his former team Hamburg.
With this loss, Hamburg remained at the bottom of the standings after losing its first two matches this season without scoring a goal, while Mainz raised its score to four points to occupy fifth place.
“It was an excellent performance,” Mainz coach Urs Fischer said after the match. We dominated for 90 minutes, and we hardly gave them any chances. We are happy to get the three points.”
In another match, Augsburg continued its strong start to the season, after achieving its second victory in a row and defeating its host, Eintracht Frankfurt, 4-1, to obtain the full score with six points and lead the league table.
Frankfurt was the better side in the first half, and succeeded in taking an early lead after just six minutes, when Jonathan Burkhardt rose to a high cross ball sent by Younes Bentaleb, and headed it into the net.
The hosts continued their pressure and created a number of chances, and could have increased their lead before the end of the first half.
But Augsburg appeared in a completely different way after the break, and were able to equalize in the first minute of the second half through Arion Ibrahimovic, who headed the ball at the far post in his first appearance.
The visitors did not wait long, as they only needed one minute to turn the score around, after the ball reached Robin Wielhauer inside the penalty area, and he shot it into the net and gave Augsburg a 2-1 lead.
Alexis Claude-Maurice increased his team’s lead with the third goal through a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area, before Fabian Rieder concluded the festival of goals by scoring the fourth goal from a free kick, to secure Augsburg a major victory away from home.
