Barcelona defends a completed project and Real Madrid begins the Mourinho revolution.. Who owns the team of the season?

The new conflict between Barcelona and Real Madrid starts from two completely opposite points. The Catalan club will enter the 2026-2027 season as champions of the league for the second time in a row, and with a team that has maintained its coach, style and basic elements, while its rival begins a season headlined by rebuilding after two years without major titles and the return of Jose Mourinho to the Santiago Bernabeu bench.

This time the competition is not just about the number of stars. Barcelona wants to develop a successful team without spoiling its balance, and Real Madrid is required to transform an expensive and individually strong group into a disciplined team that can regain the league and compete for the Champions League. What awaits the two biggest teams in the world?

Barcelona…stability has become a source of strength and pressure
Coach Hansi Flick enters his third season with Barcelona after leading the team to two consecutive league titles. This continuity gives the Catalan club a clear advantage in the first weeks, as the players do not need to learn a new system or build different relationships on the field. The team also now has a clear nucleus that includes Joan Garcia, Pau Cobarci, Jules Kounde, Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Rafinha and Lamin Yamal.
But the deal that may change the shape of the team is the joining of Rodri from Manchester City with a contract until 2030. His presence gives Barcelona a focal player capable of setting the rhythm, protecting the defense, and coming up with the ball under pressure, which are jobs that Flick had previously been forced to distribute between more than one player. Rodri may allow Pedri to move in more advanced areas, relieving him of the burden of starting attacks and defending at the same time. However, his arrival will open a strong battle in the middle, because Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, Marc Casado, Marc Bernal, Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez will not all find regular minutes.
And here begins the real challenge for Flick. Having a large number does not automatically mean having balance. The coach is required to distribute the roles without losing players who he feels deserve the main participation.
Faster attack… but who scores inside the area?

Barcelona strengthened its wings by signing Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, adding speed and the ability to attack spaces to its attack. The two players can give the team different solutions than Rafinha and Lamin Yamal, especially in matches where it faces an advanced defense or when it needs to launch quick counterattacks. This diversity gives Flick an opportunity to rest Lamine Yamal and not burden him with a whole new season, after he became the most influential player and attracted oversight. Yamal is waiting for a different test this season, as he is no longer required to prove his talent, but rather maintain his level and deal with defenses that will assign more than one player to stop him.
As for Rafinha, he enters the season demanding to prove that his influence is not linked to a temporary period of brilliance. He appeared in good form in the Juan Gamper Trophy, where he was named the best player in Barcelona’s victory over Al-Ahly of Egypt.
However, the outright striker’s position remains the biggest question. Barcelona has a large number of wingers and midfielders capable of scoring, but it needs a player who decides the ball inside the penalty area when spaces are limited.
Young Egyptian Hamza Abdel Karim excelled by scoring four goals in the preparation period, but the transition from shining in friendly matches to assuming responsibility for the attack throughout the season represents a much greater test.
Barcelona’s defense…the danger itself has not disappeared
Despite Barcelona’s attacking strength, its defensive style still carries a clear risk. The advancement of the back line helps him suffocate the opponent and recover the ball, but he leaves large spaces behind the defenders when the first pressure is broken.
This risk increases with reliance on attacking full-backs such as Joao Cancelo, who returned to Barcelona with a permanent contract until 2029. The Portuguese gives the team playmaking, crosses, and the ability to enter the middle, but he needs constant coverage behind him. Rodri will be important in reducing this problem, but Flick also needs to manage the rush of the full-backs and not leave the two central defenders in open confrontations. Competitors now know that the shortest way to harm Barcelona is to bypass its pressure and then quickly send the ball behind its advanced line.
Real Madrid…a new team under Mourinho’s authority
In Madrid, the season begins not with continuity but with a complete revolution. Jose Mourinho returned with a contract extending until 2029, in an attempt to restore discipline and stability to a team that ended two seasons without a major title and suffered from technical and internal problems. The Portuguese coach has a stronger group than the one he led in his first period in terms of the number of options, but he faces a more complex task as he must manage a room that includes Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Bernardo Silva, Arda Guler and Fede Valverde, each of whom wants a central role.
Real Madrid worked to rebuild its defense, and its list now includes Ibrahima Konate, Dean Howesen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Denzel Dumfries, Mark Cucurella and Alvaro Carreras, in addition to Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger and Ferlan Mendy. Official Real Madrid roster
These options allow Mourinho to build a physically strong defense, but they force him to decide the competition in more than one position. The presence of Trent and Dumfries on the right side, and Cucurella, Carreras and Mendy on the left, means that the choice of full-back will not depend on the name, but rather on the nature of the match and the required balance.
Mbappe and Vinicius…the partnership that must become a team
Real Madrid has perhaps the most dangerous attacking duo in the world, but the presence of Mbappe and Vinicius does not automatically solve the problems. They both prefer to move from the left side, and both need space and freedom, while the team needs a striker who moves inside the area and participates in pressure without the ball.
Mbappe finished last season as the league’s top scorer with 24 goals, but his goals did not give Real Madrid the title. Therefore, his judgment this season will be based on championships, not on individual numbers. As for Vinicius, he must regain continuity and focus. Mourinho could field Mbappe deep and Vinicius wide, with Bellingham or Arda Guler given the role of the player arriving from the back. But the success of this format depends on the stars’ willingness to work defensively. If pressure remains the responsibility of the midfielders alone, Real Madrid will remain penetrable, no matter how strong its defense is.
Crowded midfield…and who makes the play?
Real Madrid has Valverde, Tchoamini, Camavinga, Bellingham, Arda Guler and Bernardo Silva, names that give Mourinho great options, but they do not provide an easy answer about the ideal lineup.
Valverde provides energy and coverage, Tshuamini provides defensive strength, Camavinga the ability to carry the ball, while Bernardo provides control and creativity. As for Bellingham and Guler, they prefer to approach the penalty area. The lineup that Real Madrid started with in its last preparatory match against Schalke showed some features of the project, as Valverde, Bernardo, Guler, and Brahim Diaz played behind Vinicius and Mbappe.
Therefore, Barcelona has the advantage of readiness and stability. The players know Flick’s ideas, and the addition of Rodri, Gordon and Adeyemi added options to an already successful team. If the club maintains the fitness of Pedri, Lamine Yamal and Rafinha, and addresses the problem of spaces behind its defence, it will become a natural candidate to retain the league. As for Real Madrid, it has a deeper roster and a stronger defense on paper, but it needs time to transform the deals into a cohesive unit. His chances will depend on Mourinho’s ability to control the dressing room, find a balance between Mbappe and Vinicius, and give the midfield clear roles.
