He wanted Real Madrid, but Barcelona kidnapped him... Behind the scenes of the Rodri deal

Barcelona has reached a final agreement with Manchester City to sign Rodri, beating Real Madrid in the race for the best player in the 2026 World Cup.

The newspaper “Marca” revealed that Rodri was dreaming of moving to Real Madrid, but the club’s management was not completely convinced of the deal, due to the player’s age and style of playing, as some officials saw that he kept the ball more than the team’s needs required.

On the other hand, Barcelona showed a clear desire to include him, with the support of President Joan Laporta, Sports Director Deco, and coach Hansi Flick, in addition to a number of team players.

According to the newspaper, the financial offers were not the decisive factor in Rodri’s decision, given the similar conditions of the two clubs, but he preferred the Barcelona project, which is more compatible with his style and the way the Spanish national team plays.

The 30-year-old player is expected to arrive in Barcelona on Tuesday to undergo medical examinations, before completing a deal worth 60 million euros, in addition to bonuses estimated at about 11 million.
