The Uruguayan Football Federation chose Diego Forlan to lead the national team until March 2027, following the departure of Marcelo Bielsa following their exit from the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.
Federation President Ignacio Alonso explained that Forlan will lead the national team in the 2030 World Cup qualifiers during September, October and November, in addition to the friendly matches scheduled until the end of his contract.
Forlan will also coach the U-20 team in preparation for the South American Youth Championship in January 2027.
The Uruguayan star, who was crowned the best player in the 2010 World Cup, previously coached Peñarol in 2020 and Atenas de San Carlos in 2021.
