Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nabih Berri, and Speaker of the Iranian Shura Council, Muhammad Baqer Qalibaf, stressed the need for the United States and the guarantors of the American-Iranian memorandum of understanding to adhere to their responsibilities regarding ending the Israeli war on Lebanon and ensuring Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory.
This came during a phone call between Berri and Qalibaf, during which the latest developments in the situation in Lebanon and the region were discussed, in addition to the political and field developments related to the memorandum of understanding that was signed between Washington and Tehran.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the discussion dealt in particular with the item related to ending the Israeli war on Lebanon and the related political and field entitlements during the next stage.
The two sides stressed the need for the United States and the sponsors and guarantors of the memorandum, along with the international community, to play an active role in obligating Israel to stop its military operations, end what they described as the war on Lebanon, stop the demolition of villages, and respect Lebanese sovereignty.
They also stressed the necessity of immediate withdrawal from the Lebanese territories that Israel still controls, considering that this constitutes an essential part of any path that leads to stabilization and ending tension.
The call comes in light of the close Lebanese and regional follow-up to the repercussions of the American-Iranian understanding, especially with regard to the Lebanese side, which Tehran says includes ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon.
It also coincides with the continuation of preparations for the expected negotiations regarding the next phase of the understanding between Washington and Tehran, amid differences in positions regarding the implementation mechanisms and guarantees required to ensure compliance with the terms of the agreement.
