“Lebanon Debate”
With two successive steps, one political and the other symbolic, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam sent a clear message to the parties behind the campaign that targeted Secretary-General of the Prime Minister Mahmoud Makiya, stressing his adherence to him and his confidence in his performance, in the face of the accusations that have been circulated over the past days.
The first step was assigning Makiya to manage the Cannabis Authority, in a decision to carry clear messages of support. As for the second step, and the most significant on the political level, it was represented by the photos published by the Prime Minister’s account on social media from the Cabinet session that was held yesterday.
One of the photos that brought together Nawaf Salam and Mahmoud Makkiya caught attention, as it was clear the extent of mutual trust between the two men, in an indirect message that came in response to the recent campaigns targeting the Secretary-General of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
Lebanon Debate’s information indicates that the campaign targeting Makiya is inseparable from the efforts of some aspirants to the position of Secretary-General of the Prime Minister’s Office, who are seeking to remove him from his position in preparation for putting forward alternative names that promote themselves as having external support. According to the sources, the accusations made against him fall within the framework of a battle for influence over one of the most prominent administrative positions in the country, after it was not possible to achieve this goal through traditional political and administrative channels.
The messages did not stop at the borders of the photo or the administrative decision, as “Lebanon Debate” information confirms that the legal path related to the accusations brought against Makiya has taken its judicial path, amid expectations that it will have major repercussions on the credibility of the parties that launched these campaigns.
As the file moves to the judiciary, the accused will have to present whatever evidence and documents they have to prove their allegations, something informed sources confirm will not be possible, since what has been circulated is based on fabricated allegations that lack any documented facts or documents, which puts those who made them before a judicial entitlement that may backfire against them and reveal the truth of what has been promoted during the last period.
According to the same sources, what the stages of litigation will reveal will not only be limited to refuting and dropping the accusations, but may also shed light on the true backgrounds of the campaign, the parties behind it, and the actual goals it sought to achieve by targeting Makiya and trying to influence the position of the Secretary-General of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
