US Secretary of State Marco Rubio launched a sharp attack on Hezbollah, condemning what he described as a “reckless” call to overthrow the democratically elected Lebanese government, and stressing that the United States stands firmly with the legitimate Lebanese government.
Rubio said that Hezbollah “ignored the Lebanese government’s calls to respect the ceasefire,” noting that it “continued to fire on Israeli positions and move fighters to the south.”
He added that the Lebanese government is working to achieve recovery, reconstruction and securing aid, stressing that it has the full support of the United States.
Rubio stressed that Hezbollah “seeks to drag Lebanon back into chaos and destruction,” pointing out that Washington supports the Lebanese government in its efforts to restore its authority and build a better future for Lebanon.
He stressed that “Hezbollah’s threats of violence and the overthrow of the government will not be allowed to succeed,” adding that “the era in which Hezbollah held the entire nation of Lebanon hostage is coming to an end.”
