In a new indication of escalating security concerns in northern Israel, the Israeli army announced the cancellation of a number of events that had previously received an exemption from the restrictions on the home front, against the backdrop of estimates of the possibility of attacks from Hezbollah.
The Israeli army said that the cancellation decision came “due to the possibility of Hezbollah carrying out attacks,” in light of the escalating tension on the Lebanese-Israeli front during the last hours.
The Israeli army also accused Hezbollah of using civilians as “human shields,” stressing that Israel is “doing everything it can to protect civilians.”
This development comes at a time when the southern border of Lebanon is witnessing a rapid escalation, with the continuation of Israeli raids on a number of southern towns and the Bekaa, in conjunction with operations that Hezbollah announces will be carried out against Israeli positions and vehicles at the border.
UNIFIL had previously announced that it had monitored an unprecedented increase in the number of projectiles fired in recent days, noting that hundreds of projectiles were recorded daily, at the highest rate since April 16, amid warnings of a further deterioration in the situation.
The field escalation also coincided with repeated Israeli warnings to residents of a number of southern villages, and the cancellation of events and activities in northern Israel, in light of fears of the expansion of the scope of the confrontation.
This also comes in parallel with political movements and indirect negotiations between Lebanon and Israel under American sponsorship, amid anticipation as to whether the recent military developments will affect the course of these talks or push towards further escalation.
