In light of the escalation of tension against the backdrop of the campaigns against the Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi, and the political and religious reactions it provoked, the President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, entered the line of action, warning of the repercussions of harming spiritual shrines on the country’s unity and stability.

Aoun stressed that attacking the heads of Christian and Islamic sects and spiritual shrines is “a condemned and rejected act,” given the values represented by the spiritual leaders that go beyond the religious dimension to touch the national dimension, stressing the necessity of not harming these values that embody the unity of Lebanon and its people.

He pointed out that applicable laws prevent such abuses and punish their perpetrators, calling for respect for legal frameworks in dealing with this type of case.

He also called on the President of the Republic to keep differences in viewpoints within their political framework, and to refrain from personal insults, warning of the negative repercussions of these practices, especially in light of the current circumstances that require broad national solidarity.
