A horrific accident shakes the corners of world football, as Dominic Frimpong, a player for the Ghanaian Berekum Chelsea team, was killed on Sunday after being hit by gunshot wounds. The armed attack occurred on the team bus while it was heading on the “Goaso-Bibiani” road in Ghana.
An official statement issued by the club stated that a group of armed men blocked the bus’s path and opened direct fire on it, forcing the players and members of the technical staff to flee into the nearby bushes for their lives.
The club indicated that Frimpong suffered very serious injuries during the attack, and died while preparing to be transferred to a specialized medical center, after receiving the necessary first aid.
It is noteworthy that the young midfielder, on loan from Aduana FC, participated in 13 matches this season and scored two goals, and was considered one of the most prominent emerging talents in the Ghanaian league.
This incident caused widespread shock in Ghanaian sports circles, and calls increased for tightening security measures to protect sports clubs and teams during their movements between different cities.
The attack also once again highlighted the growing security concerns faced by sports teams in some areas of Ghana, especially during long road trips. (Sky News)
