
In a tragic development, the Peruvian Ministry of Health announced that at least one person was killed and 47 others were injured inside the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium in the capital, Lima, during a mass gathering that preceded a derby football match. Details of the accident have not yet been revealed.
In a statement made by Peruvian Health Minister Juan Carlos Velasco to the media, he said: “An unfortunate accident occurred at the stadium that resulted in 47 people being injured… Unfortunately, one death was recorded,” without going into details about the nature or causes of the accident.
This incident sparked widespread alert in the city, as hospitals were placed in a state of maximum readiness to receive the injured and provide them with the necessary medical care.
It is noteworthy that the accident occurred in the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, popularly known as “Matuti”, which is located in the Matuti neighborhood in the La Victoria area in the capital, Lima, and is the official headquarters of the Alianza Lima Club.
While initial reports indicated that part of the stadium wall might have collapsed, the club categorically denied this news, stressing that any part of the facility “did not collapse.”
