Smartphone secrets: Why do our devices have more than one microphone?

Modern smartphones rely on an integrated system that includes more than one microphone distributed throughout the device, for teamwork aimed at accurately capturing the user’s voice and reducing ambient noise.

During calls, the main microphone picks up the speaker’s voice, while other microphones detect surrounding sounds, and software later intervenes by processing the signals to isolate human speech and improve its clarity.

In the same context, some phones are able to determine the direction of the sound source and focus on it based on advanced techniques such as “Beamforming”, with the mechanisms for using microphones varying according to the required task, whether it is making a call, shooting a video, or performing an audio recording.

The quality of the final result is determined based on the efficiency of signal processing and noise cancellation, which is supported in some modern devices by artificial intelligence technologies, which allows the user’s voice to be highlighted with complete clarity and reduces the interference resulting from ambient sounds.
