Google is developing a new social media project called “Tamba,” which may represent a potential competitor to the “Instagram” application, by providing a set of features that include following users, private messaging, and group conversations, in addition to sharing photos and video clips.
According to a report published by the “Android Authority” website, indicators of the project appeared in version 21.44.534 of the “YouTube” application for Android, which raised speculation about the company’s readiness to launch an independent social platform. The report monitored 38 icons related to the project, including the home page, search, camera, chat, messages, stickers, and microphone, as well as a logo bearing the playback symbol inside a scribble-like design, which is what is suggested by an interface that combines content sharing and social interaction.
The discovered code revealed interactive features that allow users to follow each other, send and approve follow-up requests, as well as conduct individual and group conversations and exchange multimedia. Indicators also include the ability to like and comment on posts, respond using voice messages or short video clips, in addition to playing “shorts” clips directly within conversations, and the presence of pages dedicated to creating accounts and displaying user activity.
Among the most prominent indicators observed was the appearance of the name of the software package “com.google.android.youtube.sandbox,” along with references to testing environments for Android and iOS, which suggests that the project was tested on more than one platform. However, the use of the term “Sandbox” refers to an isolated testing environment, which leaves the possibility that “Tampa” is merely a pilot project to develop new social features and not a stand-alone application.
These leaks coincide with YouTube’s efforts to expand messaging services within its application, including plans to add group conversations, which opens the door to the possibility of integrating “Tampa” features into the current platform. So far, Google has not officially announced the project or set a date for its launch, which leaves the future of “Tampa” and its final nature undecided.
