US-Russian discussions to discuss lifting sanctions on the Direct Investment Fund

The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering a Russian request to lift sanctions imposed on the Russian Direct Investment Fund, as part of efforts aimed at improving economic relations between Washington and Moscow, according to what the New York Times reported, citing informed sources.

The report explained that the Russian request is linked to the Fund’s role in arranging shipments of Russian diesel to the United States. Moscow seeks to remove the restrictions imposed on him to enable him to participate in these commercial transactions. In the same context, an American official confirmed to the newspaper that the request is currently subject to review in accordance with established procedures.

Kirill Dmitriev heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund and serves as the Russian President’s special envoy for economic and investment cooperation with foreign countries, in addition to playing a pivotal role in Russian-American communications related to economic cooperation and efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.

It is noteworthy that the United States had imposed official sanctions on the Direct Investment Fund in February 2022, following the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, as part of a broad package of measures targeting a number of Russian institutions and figures.
