Iran denied reports that an American request was issued for its diplomatic delegation to leave New York City immediately, stressing that the delegation’s departure came according to a pre-determined timetable and Washington was officially informed of it.
The Iranian mission to the United Nations explained, in a statement carried by the official IRNA news agency, that the delegation headed by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi left New York on Monday evening, local time, according to the specific program that was communicated to the US State Department on September 17, describing the news about the delegation’s expulsion as “an artificial atmosphere” and “baseless news” originating from Washington’s inability to achieve any political gains.
On the other hand, the American website “Axios” quoted an official in the American administration and an informed source as saying that Secretary of State Marco Rubio asked the Iranian delegation to leave immediately on Monday, against the backdrop of faltering negotiations and the expiration of the period allowed for their stay after the conclusion of the work of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The American website considered this step an “unusual diplomatic rebuke” that reflects the depth of the crisis of trust between the two sides, noting that the White House was counting until the morning on achieving negotiating progress before the talks reached a dead end by the evening.
These developments come amid intense diplomatic efforts led by the State of Qatar to mediate and reach an agreement to end the war between the two countries. However, these efforts achieved only limited breakthroughs, with each party adhering to its positions and the lack of willingness to make mutual concessions, which kept the settlement process faltering.
