The Syrian Internal Security Forces arrested former Brigadier General Jaber Mehrez Ibrahim, former commander of the 138th Air Defense Brigade in the town of Sidon in the Daraa countryside, against the backdrop of accusations of committing violations and crimes against civilians during his work under the former regime.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior reported that the records and results of preliminary investigations indicate Ibrahim’s involvement in issuing orders to kill, arrest, and suppress demonstrators, in addition to his active participation in military campaigns that targeted villages and towns in the eastern countryside of Daraa, which included pursuing civilians and targeting their homes.
The Ministry added that investigations hold the position directly responsible for the Sidon housing massacre, which claimed the lives of about 120 people, in addition to his name being linked to systematic arrests and torture operations that affected a number of people in the governorate, including the child Hamza Al-Khatib.
The Internal Security Forces confirmed that the arrest of Ibrahim falls within the ongoing efforts to prosecute those accused of committing crimes and violations against Syrians, in preparation for referring him to the competent judiciary for trial in accordance with applicable legal procedures.
