US President Donald Trump raised his threats towards Iran, hinting at the possibility of targeting the “Ax Mountain” site, and stressing that Washington will not allow Tehran to possess a nuclear weapon, at a time when he linked the end of the war to the US midterm elections.
During a speech he delivered in Dallas before a Republican Party conference regarding the midterm elections, Trump said that the United States controls the Strait of Hormuz, proposing to call it the “Trump Strait.”
He added that the war with Iran “will end immediately after our victory in the next elections,” referring to the midterm elections.
In previous statements on Wednesday, Trump hinted at the possibility of directing more strikes against Iran, stressing that Washington is not currently seeking to conclude an agreement with Tehran, without closing the door to negotiations.
“We are not looking for an agreement,” he told reporters before heading to Dallas, adding: “I am doing more than the nuclear agreement.”
When asked about the possibility of negotiations with Iran, Trump indicated that this might happen.
Trump’s statements about the imminent end of the war come at a time when American reports indicate more cautious estimates within his administration.
The Wall Street Journal quoted American officials as saying that senior White House advisors warned Trump, in closed discussions, of the possibility of the conflict with Iran continuing until the end of his presidential term.
According to the newspaper, Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were among the officials who discussed with Trump the possibility of Tehran’s ability to continue resisting American pressure, which could prolong the conflict.
