The Internal Security Command in Latakia Governorate, in cooperation with the Counter-Terrorism Department, arrested the commander of the 11th Infantry Division in the former Syrian regime forces, Major General Haitham Suleiman Barakat, and Brigadier General Marwan Suleiman Barakat, on charges of their involvement in violations and military operations during the years of the Syrian revolution.
The Internal Security Forces said that the available information confirms Haitham Barakat’s involvement in repressing and arresting civilians, imposing royalties and financial blackmail, and fabricating charges linked to armed groups, in addition to accusations of participating in the liquidation and disappearance of detainees and activists.
She added that Marwan Barakat is accused of involvement in the military operations carried out by the 15th Infantry Brigade of the Fifth Division in Daraa Governorate, where he served as head of the artillery department between 2011 and 2019. According to his testimony, the brigade participated in the bombing of a number of cities and towns in Daraa, including the city of Inkhil, before he later assumed command of the 165th Artillery Regiment within the First Corps.
She indicated that investigations are continuing with the detainees to reveal details of the violations attributed to them and determine the responsibilities associated with them.
