US President Donald Trump concludes the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States with an exceptional car race held for the first time in the streets of Washington, D.C., in a huge sporting event that comes at the end of a summer full of sports shows and events.
The “Freedom 250” race is held within the IndyCar series, and passes through a number of the most prominent landmarks in Washington, including the National Mall, the Congress Building, and historic Pennsylvania Avenue, all the way to the vicinity of the National Archives building. The main event is scheduled to take place Sunday afternoon local time.
The organizers expect the race to attract about 200,000 spectators, while attendance tickets will be free, while entry tickets to private clubs near the circuit have been sold for $5,000.
Trump’s motorcade is scheduled to make an honorary tour around the circuit, with the US President raising the green flag to signal the start of the race, which extends for about 402 kilometers.
Trump had said in July, during the race drivers’ visit to the White House coinciding with the start of construction work on the track, that he did not know if there was an event that could surpass what the Americans would witness.
The race comes as part of a series of sporting events that Trump used to celebrate the United States during his second term, at a time when his approval rating fell to its lowest levels since his return to the White House in January 2025, coinciding with the United States’ involvement in a war with Iran.
The summer began with a professional mixed martial arts fight held on the South Lawn of the White House, before Trump presented the championship trophy to Spain, the winner of the FIFA World Cup, a month later.
These events contributed to enhancing Trump’s presence at the local and international levels, as Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fights were broadcast globally, and Trump also appeared during the World Cup handover ceremony in the middle of the field for a while, while the Spanish national team was celebrating raising the cup.
