The new system is scheduled to begin implementation on August 24, which may lead to an increase in the number of views recorded by content creators at a faster pace than before.
YouTube said that the change aims to unify viewing standards between different content formats, and give content creators a clearer picture of the extent to which their clips reach the audience.
Under the new mechanism, the view will be counted once the video starts playing or replaying, similar to what the Instagram and TikTok platforms rely on. On the other hand, the “X” platform counts the view after playing the video for at least two seconds.
YouTube had adopted a similar mechanism for Shorts clips last year, while the method of calculating views in traditional video clips remained different and not completely clear, amid a common belief that recording a view required following about 30 seconds of the video.
Although the main view counter has changed, YouTube will retain previous viewing data under the “Engaged Views” metric in the analytics panel, allowing content creators to differentiate between the number of times a video was started and the actual level of engagement with it.
The platform confirmed that the change will not affect the profits of content creators or the eligibility conditions for joining the YouTube Partners Program (YPP), as profits will remain linked to metrics such as interactive views of Shorts clips and hours of interactive viewing, and not just the total number of views.
The amendment comes as part of a series of updates that YouTube is making to content creators’ tools, in conjunction with expected changes in the requirements for joining the Partner Program during the next year.
The platform explained that the multiplicity of systems for calculating views between different content formats has caused confusion among content creators, noting that unifying standards aims to provide a more accurate understanding of the extent of the content’s spread and its reach to the audience.
