Member of the “Development and Liberation” bloc, MP Qassem Hashem, called for quick Lebanese action to reconsider the Security Council’s decision related to the “UNIFIL” forces and renew them for a new term, stressing that their continued presence in the south is still a necessity at the current stage.
Hashem stressed “the importance of UNIFIL forces continuing their role in the southern region in all its diversity, because there is an urgent need to complete what it started, especially the implementation of Resolution 1701, and to be a witness to the Israeli criminality and aggression that did not stop neither before Resolution 1701 nor with it nor after it, and this is what UNIFIL forces were conveying in their reports to the Security Council.”
Hashem’s position came during his participation in the celebration of the Indian battalion operating within “UNIFIL” on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of India’s independence.
Hashem said: “Our participation with UNIFIL and the Indian battalion, especially today, in its celebrations, is an affirmation of our commitment in Lebanon and the south to the survival of UNIFIL, due to the strong social relationship they have with the people of the areas where they are located, and to continue the required role as witnesses to Israel’s crimes and practices against the southern border areas and violations of international humanitarian law.”
Hashem concluded: “We hope that there will be an active role for the countries participating in UNIFIL and the friends of Lebanon in seeking to reconsider the UN Security Council resolution and renew it for a new term, because the need and role are still necessary at this stage, and therefore Lebanon is required to move quickly towards brotherly and friendly countries.”
