The President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, mourned the former Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, expressing his deep pain and sadness over his passing, and considering that his death represents a great loss to the sisterly State of Qatar, Lebanon and the Arab world.
President Aoun stressed that Lebanon, as president and people, remembers with all appreciation and loyalty the sincere fraternal positions expressed by the late Emir towards Lebanon, especially during the Israeli aggression in July 2006, when the State of Qatar, under his leadership, stood by the Lebanese in one of the most difficult stages that the country went through, and contributed to alleviating the suffering of its people.
He pointed out that Lebanon highly values the initiatives launched by the late Emir to reconstruct Lebanese villages and towns that were damaged by the war, considering that these initiatives embodied the depth of Arab solidarity and the spirit of responsibility, and left a lasting impact on the conscience of the Lebanese.
President Aoun added that Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa was a lover of Lebanon, and played an active role in bringing the viewpoints of the Lebanese closer together, through political initiatives that had a profound impact on the process of national reconciliation, most notably his sponsorship of the Doha Conference in 2008, which ended a delicate stage in Lebanon’s modern history, and contributed to restoring life to constitutional institutions and consolidating security and stability.
President Aoun extended his deepest condolences to the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, stressing that he is continuing his father’s path in supporting Lebanon and launching political and humanitarian initiatives aimed at enhancing security and stability and ending the suffering of the Lebanese.
He also offered his condolences to the family of the deceased and his loved ones, expressing Lebanon’s full solidarity with the State of Qatar in this painful affliction, asking God to grant the late Emir his mercy, and to inspire his family and the Qatari people patience and solace.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is considered one of the most prominent Arab leaders whose name has been associated with pivotal moments in Lebanon’s modern history, as he played a pivotal role in sponsoring the Doha Agreement in 2008, which ended a severe political and security crisis. During his reign, the State of Qatar also led extensive efforts to reconstruct the Lebanese regions affected by the July 2006 war, which consolidated its position as an essential partner in supporting Lebanon on the political and humanitarian levels.
