US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed that the United States will not allow the entry of any people connected to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard into the delegation accompanying the Iranian national team during its participation in the 2026 World Cup finals.

Rubio added, during a hearing before a committee in the US House of Representatives, yesterday, Tuesday, that Washington does not object to the entry of the Iranian football team and members of the technical and administrative staff associated with sports participation into the United States, despite the recent tensions between the two countries.

He continued: “What we will not allow is for them to include in their delegation a group of people who we know have nothing to do with sports and have connections to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard or things like that, so we will monitor that closely.”

Rubio’s statements come before the start of the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, as the Iranian national team is scheduled to play its matches in the United States, while its camp is set up in Mexico during the tournament.
