Younis Mahmoud, the former Iraqi football star, won the elections for the presidency of the Iraqi Football Federation, in the ballot held today, Saturday.

According to what was reported by the Iraqi News Agency “INA”, Younis Mahmoud received 38 votes from members of the General Assembly, compared to 20 votes for his competitor Adnan Darjal, while the candidate Iyad Bunyan received only one vote.

The agency indicated that two ballot papers were canceled during the counting process, which took place under official supervision to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

Younis Mahmoud will take over the leadership of the Iraqi Federation at an important stage, especially after the success of the “Mesopotamian Lions” team in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup finals, scheduled for the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Iraqi national team had reserved its place in the World Cup after its victory over Bolivia, 2-1, in the final of the global playoff to qualify for the World Cup.

The Iraqi national team is scheduled to compete in the tournament in Group Nine, alongside the national teams of France, Senegal and Norway.

This is Iraq’s first qualification to the World Cup in 40 years, after its last participation was in the 1986 edition, which was held in Mexico.
