American boxer Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller returned to the spotlight with a valuable victory over Cuban Liner Peru, by unanimous decision of the judges after a fight that lasted 12 rounds. The confrontation was held within the World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight final qualifiers, at the Fontainebleau Arena in Las Vegas.
Miller, who is 37 years old, increased his record to 28 wins, one loss and two draws, including 22 wins by knockout. Miller gave a strong performance that relied on his physical strength and great size.
On the other hand, Peru fought the fight with a clean record of defeats, as he achieved 13 victories, including 8 by knockout, and he was ranked second in the WBA classification, benefiting from his recent victories over Jordan Thompson and Detrilos Webster.
Miller started the fight cautiously in the first and second rounds, then gradually began to impose his style as the confrontation turned into close and stressful clashes. As the rounds went on, the huge weight difference – more than 50 pounds in Miller’s favor – began to clearly affect Pirro’s performance, and he appeared to be extremely tired.
After the end of the fight, Miller stated that losing weight helped him greatly, and added: “100 percent. The weight came off easily, and we focused on fitness because the camp was short.”
Since the third round, Miller was able to pull his opponent into the fight he prefers, which is a close encounter, where he took advantage of his physical strength and continuous pressure. Although Peru found some good moments when he moved away and kept his distance, they were not enough to change the course of the confrontation.
In the final rounds, Miller seemed more in control of the rhythm of the fight, while Pirro was busy defending himself and avoiding pressure. The performance was not dazzling, but it was effective and decisive in scoring the judges’ points.
After the end of the 12 rounds, the judges declared Miller the winner on points with scores of 117-111, 117-111, and 115-113, achieving a well-deserved unanimous decision victory in a difficult, physical fight.
