After Amazon’s acquisition of Globalstar, Apple’s satellite partner, speculation increased about possible cooperation between the two companies. There are leaks about four new satellite-related features that may soon appear on iPhones.
Fifth generation technology via satellite:
According to circulating information, Apple’s new C2 modem, which is expected to be used in the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra this fall, will provide support for fifth generation technology via satellite. This would provide higher connection speeds and make using this service smoother compared to the current situation. Apple is also working to facilitate the process of communicating with satellites.
Apple Maps Support:
Apple Maps currently allows downloading of maps for offline use, but they require a Wi-Fi or cellular connection when downloading. Bloomberg reports stated that Apple is working on allowing the use of maps via satellite as well, but the reports have not yet determined whether this feature will depend on the new fifth generation capabilities in the C2 modem.
Send photos via messages:
Bloomberg also reports that Apple is planning to add a satellite image sending feature to the Messages app. This can be useful in everyday use, especially in emergency situations or in areas where traditional coverage is not available.
External API:
In addition, Apple is developing an application programming interface (API) that will allow third-party developers to take advantage of satellite connectivity, enabling new features to be added to their various applications.
