UNIFIL turns a historical page in southern Lebanon as it lowers the curtain on its international missions

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) commemorated United Nations Day, in an event with exceptional significance that is considered the last of its kind before the end of its mandate at the end of 2026, renewing its firm commitment to maintaining peace and stability along the Blue Line.

In a message on the occasion, the Commander of UNIFIL and the head of its mission, Major General Deodato Abagnaara, stressed the importance of the founding principles of the international organization, foremost of which is peace, dialogue and cooperation, stressing that achieving peace in southern Lebanon is not guaranteed, but rather “requires trust, determination and willingness to work together.”

UNIFIL explained in an official statement that its military and civilian crews, from various countries around the world, continued their daily efforts to support the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution No. 1701, maintain stability, and support local communities in their recovery and return to their normal lives.

The commemoration of the occasion this year took on a special character as the international force entered its final chapter in southern Lebanon, where Major General Abagnaara praised the dedication of the peacekeepers, stressing that the mission would continue to focus on the pillars of security and the sustainability of peace, in addition to close cooperation with the Lebanese army and local communities until the last day of its work.

These events coincide with persistent efforts made by local communities in the south to overcome the repercussions of the recent hostilities and restore normal living conditions.

It is noteworthy that the world celebrates United Nations Day on October 24 of each year, to commemorate the entry into force of the International Organization’s Charter in 1945. Major General Abagnara concluded his message by saying: “On United Nations Day, let us renew our commitment to peace, cooperation, and serving people. Together we serve, together we build peace, and together we create the future.”
