A decade of conflict in numbers: What does the language of numbers reveal about the history of the confrontations between Barcelona and Real Madrid?

The red card received by Real Betis player, Facundo Bernal, during his team’s last match against Barcelona, highlighted a prominent statistical disparity between the leading clubs in the Spanish League over the past decade, related to cases of expulsion and minutes played with numerical superiority or inferiority.

According to a report published by the “Goal” website, based on the numbers of the famous football statistics account “MisterChip”, Barcelona benefited significantly from playing with numerical superiority for much longer periods compared to its traditional rivals, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Bernal’s expulsion came in the 54th minute of the match between Real Betis and Barcelona in the ninth round of the Spanish League, after referee Jesús Gil Manzano showed a direct red card in his face for interfering with the headbutt of Lamine Yamal, so that Barcelona was able to exploit this numerical deficiency and achieve a wide victory with a score of 5-2.

In terms of minutes, statistics over the past ten years show that Barcelona played 1,333 minutes with a numerical superiority, compared to only 471 minutes with a player deficiency, achieving a positive difference of 862 minutes. On the other hand, Real Madrid was satisfied with 570 minutes due to numerical superiority, compared to 661 minutes due to its lack of ranks, recording a negative difference of 91 minutes. As for Atletico Madrid, they played 499 minutes with a numerical superiority, compared to 829 minutes with a player deficiency, with a negative difference of 330 minutes.

This disparity is not limited to the time factor, but extends to the number of red cards. 30 players from Barcelona were expelled during the aforementioned period, compared to the expulsion of 55 players from their competing teams, with a positive difference accompanied by 25 cases in favor of the Catalan club.

In the same context, Real Madrid witnessed the expulsion of 35 players from its ranks compared to 38 players from its competitors, with a slight positive difference of three cases. On the other hand, Atletico Madrid recorded completely different numbers, with 45 players from its ranks being expelled compared to only 29 players being expelled from competing teams, recording a negative difference of 16 cases, with the report indicating that these statistics include all relevant competitions.
