The head of the Lebanese Phalange Party, MP Sami Gemayel, linked the issue of the recently seized shipment of explosives to the series of assassinations that Lebanon witnessed between 2004 and 2008, calling on the Lebanese state to take immediate action to implement the law and dismantle Hezbollah’s military and security structure.
In his tweet on the “X” platform, Gemayel recalled a historical moment by saying: “In 2005, the explosives truck was not stopped, and the result was the assassination of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri,” noting that “We will not ask about the purpose of using explosives transported by Hezbollah members, as the most likely wave of assassinations was as between 2004 and 2008.”
The Lebanese MP considered that “postponing the implementation of decisions and enforcing the law is what constitutes a threat to civil peace,” calling on the state to “immediately begin dismantling Hezbollah’s military and security structure before we all pay the price of terrorism again.”
This escalatory situation comes against the backdrop of the recent seizure of explosives, which has brought the issue of weapons outside legitimate institutions and the extent of the state’s ability to implement its decisions to the forefront of the political debate in the country.
