An American jury ordered Apple to pay financial damages exceeding $5.7 billion, after it was found guilty of violating two patents belonging to the company Taction Technology.
The lawsuit filed by “Taction Technology” focused on accusing the American technology giant of using its own technology to develop the “Taptic” engine, which supports basic functions in “iPhone” devices and “Apple” watches, most notably the vibrating alert system.
On the other hand, Apple expressed its complete rejection of the ruling issued last Friday, confirming in statements to the CNBC news channel that it had not used the technology in question, and that it would file a formal appeal to appeal the ruling.
It is noteworthy that large damages awards are relatively common in patent cases before the American judiciary, but they are often subject to significant reductions during the subsequent litigation and appeal stages.
In addition, the jury concluded in the merits of its decision that Apple’s violation of the two patents was not intentional, which is a legal factor that prevented the value of the damages awarded from tripling, which would have been a possibility if bad faith had been proven.
