The Israeli ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Laiter, announced that the life of his son, reservist Neria, is still in danger and hanging by a thread, after he was seriously injured in a run-over attack that took place last Wednesday at a military checkpoint near Route 443 in the Binyamin area in the West Bank. A medical official at Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem, where Neria is being treated in critical condition and has undergone several complex brain surgeries, explained that the medical team is re-evaluating his condition and treatment hour by hour.
In a post on the “X” platform, Laiter thanked everyone who supported his family and prayed for them, noting that he had observed some encouraging signs that the family clings to with hope, and affirming belief in the power of prayer even in cases of impossible recovery. He also called for all those injured in the attacks to be included in prayer, and described his son and his companions as “heroes” who are fighting a battle “for the future of civilization.”
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority “Kan” reported that the perpetrator of the attack, Mahmoud Suleiman from the village of Beit Ur al-Tahta, was killed at the site of the operation, while Israeli security investigations suggested that he carried out the attack alone. It is noteworthy that Neria had returned to reserve service despite the killing of his older brother, Moshe Yedidia Laiter, in the battles in the Gaza Strip.
On the diplomatic level, Yehiel Leiter is considered Israel’s representative in the talks with Lebanon, and he recently met with the Lebanese ambassador to Washington, Nada Hamada Moawad, at the US State Department to follow up on the course of the negotiations. “After receiving news of his son’s injury, Leiter was forced to return to Israel, abandoning plans to accompany Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the United Nations.
