After sixty: Jeddah enters the sport of weightlifting and is crowned world champion

British Martine Barrons achieved a remarkable sporting achievement by being crowned the World Powerlifting Championship for the third time, at the age of 65, despite having entered the world of sports competitions only less than three years ago.

According to “People” magazine, Barons hails from the city of Stratford-upon-Avon, and her passion for lifting weights began during the general lockdown period, after she listened to an awareness seminar that advised menopausal women to stay away from running sports and focus on physical strength exercises.

Barrones took her first steps into this sport at the hands of a colleague who works as a personal trainer at the University of Warwick, where he helped her master the “deadlift” technique. As indicators of her exceptional abilities appeared, she later earned the nickname “Grandma Weightlifter.”

Barons was recently crowned champion of the AWPC World Powerlifting Championship, in the age group extending from 65 to 85 years, after her beginnings in participating in championships were limited to having an enjoyable experience and nothing more.

Regarding the impact of this sport on her life, Barons confirmed that the training brought about a radical transformation in her physical structure and abilities, noting that she feels that her body has become “twenty years younger.” She also noted that the physical strength she gained had a positive impact on the details of her daily life, from rearranging the furniture to playing with her grandchildren, as well as significantly enhancing her self-confidence.
