In anticipation of the rainy season, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport launched a package of preventive measures aimed at addressing the root causes of water accumulation on the roads, accompanied by a broad awareness campaign calling on citizens not to throw waste in the vicinity of rainwater drains and sewers, in conjunction with continuing cleaning, insulation and field maintenance work within the scope of its powers.
In launching the campaign, the Ministry stressed that drain cleaning operations lose their effectiveness if waste continues to accumulate in them, warning of the danger of rainwater washing away this waste, causing blockage of drains and the return of the problem of water accumulating on road networks.
The concerned authorities stressed that protecting service gains is not limited to official efforts alone, but rather requires integration of roles and assuming social responsibility, which begins with citizens’ commitment to refrain from throwing waste in the streets and around water drains.
In a related context, the Ministry adopted a slogan for its campaign in a local formulation close to the street, which stated: “Let us not throw our achievements out of the window! Last winter we succeeded together… and this winter, we will not allow anything to bring us back. Do not dump garbage until you block the filters.”
These moves come as a culmination of the Ministry of Works’ preparations for the winter, which include intensifying workshops to clean and isolate rainwater drainage channels, and maintaining hot spots on the roads, in order to reduce the possibility of localized floods and frequent water accumulations with the peak of rainfall.
This step reflects a broader strategic direction aimed at establishing a partnership in responsibility between official institutions and citizens, especially since random waste dumping remains the most prominent obstacle to the efficiency of drainage networks, despite their being subject to periodic rehabilitation and maintenance.
