The Kahboub front overlooking Bab al-Mandab on the western coast of Yemen witnessed a large-scale military escalation, following the announcement by the Yemeni armed forces of repelling an attack launched by the Houthis, which resulted in violent confrontations that lasted for more than three continuous hours.
In response to this attack, the Yemeni armed forces carried out an air strike targeting Houthi gatherings in the “Darifa” area of the “Al-Wazi’iyah” district. The forces broadcast video scenes documenting the destruction of four military vehicles belonging to the government and the killing of all those on board, in addition to targeting other gatherings of the group’s members on the “Kahboub” front.
This field escalation comes in conjunction with growing international concerns about the security of navigation in one of the most prominent global sea lanes, and in light of the escalation of Houthi attacks and the high level of threats in the Bab al-Mandab Strait during the current month.
At the international level, the Italian Ministry of Defense announced its intention to deploy warships to ensure the safe passage of its ships off the Yemeni coast, stressing that it will not wait for a joint decision from the European Union, and that it possesses the necessary capabilities to protect navigation. Rome warned of dire economic repercussions if traffic through the vital waterway was disrupted.
