Under the sun of the father, a sudden deterioration in solar energy leaves the Lebanese in the dark!

“Libyan Dibit” – Hassan Ajami

At the heart of the exceptional heat wave that strikes Lebanon, citizens live in a suffocating summer, after the climate disaster met with the collapse of the infrastructure. Electricity is cut off from most regions, and the generators are being managed according to severe legalization schedules under the pretext of “the break”, which increases the suffering of the Lebanese amid unbearable heat.

The country, which has never been equipped with itself as other countries do to confront the harsh climatic conditions, stood by a free wave that turned into a harsh test of the Lebanese’s ability to adapt in a country that lacks the most basic elements of emergency.

Even those who tried to get out of the circle of electrical blackmail by investing in solar energy systems, found themselves in front of an unpleasant surprise: the panels that until yesterday secured electricity throughout the day, began in recent days unable to meet the basic needs. What has changed?

The high temperature of the panels … the “silent killer” of efficiency

One of the engineers of the energy systems in Lebanon explains to “Libanon Debayette” that the first reason is the excessive heat to which photovoltaic panels are exposed. These panels are designed to work perfectly at a cell temperature of about 25 ° C, but with the current atmosphere that ranges between 35 and 45 ° C, the cell temperature itself reaches more than 60 ° C.

He adds: “Each degree above 25 ° C means a decrease in efficiency by 0.3% and 0.5%, and this means that the current heat wave is automatically translated automatically with a significant decrease in production, even if sunlight is abundant.”

High humidity … sunlight does not reach complete

The second factor is the high humidity that fills the air with water vapor, which leads to the absorption of part of the solar radiation and its dispersal before it reaches the surface of the panels. The result, according to the engineer, is a noticeable decline in the intensity of effective light, especially in the days when moisture is dense, as production can clearly descend despite the sky looks clear with the abstract eye.

Dust and pressure on electronic ingredients

The hot and wet atmosphere creates an ideal environment for dust and pollutants on the panels, especially in the morning when a light moisture layer is formed on the surface, which blocks part of the light and increases the loss of efficiency.

But it does not stop here, as the high heat puts electronic components under tremendous pressure, especially the viruses (current transformers) and shipping control devices. These devices, to protect themselves from damage, may have to reduce their capacity or temporary stopping, which exacerbates the production crisis in the most times when the citizen needs electricity.

Imported solutions … but they are not supernatural

While the Lebanese hope that solar energy is a permanent solution to the electricity crisis, the current wave of heat reveals that these imported solutions are not immune to the harsh climatic conditions, and that the total dependence on them calls for a deep understanding of its technical limits, and perhaps developing alternative plans for emergency times.
