The fate of the minimum wage … close solutions looming on the horizon?

“Libyan Deepite”

In light of the worsening living pressures, the index committee held yesterday its periodic meeting headed by Minister of Labor, Mohamed Haider, in the presence of representatives of the General Labor Union, economic bodies, and the National Social Security Fund, to follow up on the debate on the minimum wage and other social rights.

In this context, the President of the General Labor Union, Bishara Al -Asmar, stressed, in an interview with “Libanon Debayette”, that “the meeting falls within the framework of the periodic follow -up by the index committee, especially after the controversy that previously took place regarding the minimum wage, as it was agreed that it is not sufficient to secure a decent living standard, which must continue the discussion to improve the conditions of workers.”

Al -Asmar explained that “yesterday’s meeting came in line with this trend, as the Minister of Labor explicitly expressed the difficult living reality, noting that the new minimum wage, to be applied starting from next month, does not rise to securing a decent life for workers in the public and private sectors.”

He added: “The discussion also dealt with the file of high cost of living, and the draft end of service, retirement and social protection law, which began to take its way towards actual application, especially with the issuance of the decrees of the formation of a new board of directors for the National Social Security Fund, and also indicated that the meeting discussed the conditions of workers in the public sector, and it was emphasized the need for these periodic meetings to follow up on the basic economic and social files.”

Regarding the possibility of subsequent amendments to the minimum wage, he explained that “there is certainly an intention to adjust the minimum, as well as the transfer and school scholarships, which were not modified this year despite the urgent need for that, in addition to family compensation, in light of the restoration of social security for its ability to cover medical and hospital expenditures, especially the compensation of the husband and children.”

Al -Asmar concluded, stressing that “the periodic meetings of the index committee will continue, in parallel with the monthly meetings that the ministerial committee in charge of following up the implementation of the retirement and social protection law will be held in order to put these files on the track of practical implementation.”
