Millions of dollars .. Japan funds humanitarian projects for reconstruction in Syria

The Japanese government announced the provision of $ 5.5 million financial support, through a United Nations agency, to contribute to the rehabilitation of the main infrastructure in the slums and indiscriminate residential areas in the cities of Aleppo and the Syrian Homs, which are considered to be one of the most affected areas due to the long years of conflict.

In its press statement, the Japanese Foreign Ministry confirmed that this step comes in response to the dangerous humanitarian situation, which is still in Syria, noting that the return of increasing numbers of Syrian refugees to their homes, after the collapse of the regime of former President Bashar al -Assad last year, makes improving the living environment a “urgent issue”.
For his part, the United Nations Human Settlements Program, based in Nairobi, explained that the crisis that has extended for more than a decade, in addition to the violent earthquakes that struck Syria and Turkey in February 2023, left widespread destruction in the infrastructure, and deprived residents of the slums in Aleppo and Homs of basic services such as water, electricity, sanitation and safe housing.
The program added that the project, which enters into force in light of the increasing number of returnees, will return directly to more than 81 thousand people. He pointed out that until the end of last July, more than 746,000 refugees from neighboring countries returned to Syria, in addition to the return of more than 1.5 million displaced internally, which increases pressure on local resources and services, and makes support for reconstruction efforts an urgent humanitarian and development priority.
