In the Ministry of Finance … a meeting on salaries

Lebanese Finance Minister Yassin Jaber chaired an expanded technical meeting, dealing with the current crisis related to salaries, retirement and social security system, with the participation of all parties concerned to develop practical and applicable solutions aimed at mitigating the effects of the economic crisis on the financial and social levels.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Lebanese army leadership and internal security forces, in addition to representatives of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the International Labor Organization, as well as the Director of Finance, George Maharawi, the President of the Civil Service Council, Nisreen Mashamishi, representatives of the Ministry of Administrative Development, and a number of experts specialized in the ministry. The meeting reviewed the repercussions of the economic crisis witnessed by Lebanon during the past years, and how it affected the salaries of workers and retirees, in addition to influencing the work Social Security, and the participating authorities reviewed the proposed perceptions and solutions to address these challenges. Minister Jaber stressed the need to discuss the procedures according to scientific and practical standards that can be applicable, while preserving the rights of workers and retirees, in addition to taking into account the possibilities of public finances. He pointed out that improving salaries and pensions not only raises the standard of living, but also contributes to stimulating the movement of markets and creating a stable economic and social climate. He added: “The bet on the work you do is great, and it is a challenge for us to strive to pass it.” Stressing that creating a social and economic stable environment represents the correct beginning to achieve the social justice that the state seeks, a step that enjoys the support of the Parliament to facilitate any legislation that serves this reform plan.
