Egyptian potatoes invade Europe … a standard leap in exports

In a remarkable boom, the sweet Egyptian potatoes achieved a strong presence in the European market, with their exports increased by 324.6% during the past four years, according to the US Ministry of Agriculture data.
The exporting quantities jumped from 35.2 thousand tons in 2020 to 149.5 thousand tons in 2024, with which the value of revenues increased from 28 million dollars to 113 million dollars. This growth is due to a set of factors, most notably: high demand in Europe, the lack of local supply there, geographical proximity, in addition to increasing the crop in Egypt. Egypt produces about 485 thousand tons of sweet potatoes annually, where they are grown in April will be punished in August of each year, providing an ideal window to meet the European gap in this period. This expansion in exports establishes Egypt’s major player in the global vegetable market, and gives it a competitive advantage in meeting Europe’s agricultural products.
