Between the protection of the owner and the anxiety of the tenants

After decades of controversy, the Egyptian parliament approved radical amendments to the “old rent” law, according to which the lease contracts ended, unlimited, and laid transitional periods that extend between five and seven years before the evacuation of the units.
For thousands of families, this step represented a great concern, as the old rental law allowed them to live in apartments with low amounts that do not exceed a few pounds. Khadra Ibrahim Ali (84 years old), who pays only 11 pounds per month since 1973, says: “I am afraid .. After this age, I get out of my house?” The supporters of the law see it as a fair step, as the old laws deprived the owners of fair returns and prevented them from maintaining real estate. On the other hand, the tenants consider that the sudden liberation threatens their stability. Old, building modern buildings, and perhaps the disappearance of the popular character from the old Cairo neighborhoods. Between the rights of the owner and the rights of the tenant, Egypt stands today in front of a difficult test to achieve balance. It is mentioned that earlier in the year, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El -Sisi approved the old rental law, and the amendments were entered into force to re -ignite the historical controversy between the owners and the tenants. The law stipulated a transitional period of 7 years of housing and 5 years for non -residential before evacuation, while gradually doubling rental values (up to 20 times in some areas) and an annual increase of 15%. While the owners consider it a long -awaited step to restore balance, the union of tenants warns against the threat of the stability of millions of families, while the government announced the launch of an electronic platform to limit the affected people and study residential alternatives to them.
