Appointment of the Electricity Regulatory Authority: Will the sector repair?

The Council of Ministers approved the appointment of the Electricity Regulatory Authority, in addition to those belonging to the communications sector, declaring the beginning of a new stage in the path of reforming this sector, which has suffered exorbitant costs and Lebanese, as well as suffering from the lack of service in a basic vital facility, such as electricity.
Sabine Awais wrote in “Al -Nahar”: The reasons for the disruption were clear, as the Ministry of Energy was under the influence of the “Free Patriotic Movement” whose president chose to keep the powers that the authority extracts from the minister in the last hand in terms of decision -making. Today, an important part of these powers will move to the commission, which is clearly revealed by the Minister of Energy as Joe Sadd after the cabinet session, stressing that the establishment of the commission will open the way for investment with renewable energy with a larger size.
Certainly, this step came to keep pace with the reform measures demanded by the International Monetary Fund, countries and donor institutions, in a short distance from Lebanon’s participation in the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund, which will constitute an opportunity in which Lebanon provides an inventory of what it has done, in a way that compensates for the delay in the completion of the financial gap law. It is known that the electricity sector raises parallel external attention, as it is considered one of the urgent reform steps presented at all negotiating tables, especially in the current stage, as the government seeks to achieve achievements that put it on the table of the fund on the one hand and any international conference for support, even if it is late to wait for political steps.
With the appointment of the Electricity Regulatory Commission, the page of political disruption has been folded, and the ambition of the Free Patriotic Movement has been folded to amend the 462 law, which he worked on with the aim of limiting the authority’s powers to administrative tasks in order to keep the powers in the hands of the Minister of Guardianship.
