The European Union’s foreign policy official, Kaya Callas, announced today, Tuesday, that the bloc will continue to target the Russian economy, and that the upcoming sanctions package on Moscow will be ready by next month.
“The unity between the leaders of the European Union at the summit that was held today on the Internet was tangible,” Callas said in a statement, stressing that the security of Ukraine and the sanctions imposed on Russia topped the agenda of talks next week between foreign ministers and the defense of the European Union. She added on the “X” platform that “Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted to fulfill any promise or commitment, so the security guarantees must be strong and credible enough to deter Russia from re -assembling its ranks and launching new attacks”. Her statements came after an online summit held by the European Council to discuss the war in Ukraine, after a day from an exceptional summit that brought together Ukraine and European leaders with the president American Donald Trump in Washington. In this context, European Council President Antonio Costa stressed the need to move forward in the process of Ukraine joining the European Union, and Europe’s participation in any possible peace negotiations along with Ukraine, Russia and the United States. Costa explained that the mere possibility of holding a meeting between Ukrainian President Voludeimir Zellinski and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, “in itself is somewhat positive.” For its part, the United States and NATO announced that military leaders will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, to discuss the situation in Ukraine, at a time when Washington and European countries are working to put details of possible security guarantees for Kev.
