Eight people were killed, today, Saturday, in the accident of a tourist balloon in the state of Santa Katarina, south of Brazil, according to the authorities.

The state’s firefighting administration stated that the fire caught the balloon while flying in the early morning hours, which led to its fall in the city of Braia Grandi. The balloon was carrying 21 people, 13 of whom were transferred to nearby hospitals after they were rescued from the accident site.

A video clip, which was circulated on social media, showed moments of the fully burning of the balloon and its fall very quickly towards the ground, which sparked a wave of shock among activists.

Investigations are still ongoing to determine the reasons for the outbreak of fire in the balloon, while the authorities expressed their regret for the incident and confirmed the provision of support to the victims and their families.
