A demonstration of the Turkish opposition in Ankara

Tens of thousands of people participated, today, Sunday, in a demonstration in Ankara, called by the Republican People’s Party, the largest opposition party in Turkey, before an important judicial hearing that could lead to the overthrow of the party’s leadership.
The demonstrators gathered in the wide Tandogan Square in the Turkish capital on the eve of the hearing in a city court. About a week ago, demonstrators gathered before the party’s headquarters in Istanbul to prevent the implementation of a judicial decision issued last week to replace a senior party official, which necessitated the police intervention to break the demonstrations, and a number of supporters of the Republican People’s Party were arrested, the main opposition party in the country. Security about the building, and clashes erupted between them and a group of protesters from the party’s supporters, including deputies in Parliament. Security barriers were also placed around the building that the demonstrators were trying to remove before the clashes.
