Police and residents said on Friday that three people died as a result of the torrential torrents that swept the provinces of Hadramout and Shabwa in southeast Yemen.
Local sources indicated that heavy rains fell on the two governorates during the past hours, causing torrents and floods in several areas, as a result of an air depression currently hitting the Gulf of Aden and Bahr Al Arab. The police stated that two children, one of whom is six years old and the last eight years, were killed by drowning in the Al -Jadafra area of the Bayhan district in Shabwa. Local sources in Hadramout also said that a young man died after being washed away by the torrents in the Al -Suwairi district of the Trem district. Several directorates in the two governorates overlooking the Arabian Sea witnessed heavy rains and floods accompanied by strong winds and a large rise in the sea waves. Meteorology expects these conditions to continue in the coming days on large areas of Hadramout and Shabwa. According to the sources, the rains have caused severe damage to infrastructure and property, and several areas and a number of homes were flooded in the historic city of Shibam listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as in Hura, Sayyun and Tarim. The torrents were also washed away by dozens of cars and the main roads were cut between the coast, the Hadramout Valley and the eastern regions, while several valleys and agricultural lands were flooded in Shabwa. The early warning center in Hadramout had earlier warned of a second wave of heavy rains resulting from a new air depression that is expected to affect the eastern governorates until the beginning of next week. The center pointed out that the impact of the first depression ended after it reached the city of Aden last Tuesday, causing severe damage in a number of areas to the Red Sea. Yemen has been exposed since mid -June to harsh climatic changes that include heavy rains, thunderstorms and severe winds, which killed dozens and wounded hundreds, especially among the residents of the displacement camps. The World Bank classifies Yemen as one of the most affected Arab countries with the negative repercussions of climate change.
