“Lebanon Debate”
In light of the intense parliamentary consultations regarding the general amnesty law, optimism remains that a settlement can be reached, but the time before resolving the issue appears to be critical in transforming the “features of consensus” that have emerged into a final agreement that allows the law to be passed.
In this context, MP Melhem Riachi, in an interview with Lebanon Debate, expressed his optimism about the possibility of reaching an agreement, revealing: “Yesterday there were signs of consensus, but there was no agreement, and today we hope that the consensus will continue and turn into an agreement.”
Regarding the controversy surrounding Defense Minister Michel Mansi and the possibility of him delivering a speech during the session, Riachi refused to enter into this debate, considering that the issue belongs to the government and the House of Representatives has nothing to do with it.
He said: “This is a government matter, and we believe in the separation of powers. We do not interfere in it and it does not concern us at all.”
Riachi stressed that MPs will deal with any position raised during the session based on its content, whether issued by the Minister of Defense or Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, saying: “We listen to him if he or the Prime Minister has a conversation, and we decide what our conscience dictates to us.”
