“Lebanon Debate”
The legislative session dedicated to discussing and approving the general amnesty law began in an uncomfortable political atmosphere, against the backdrop of the repercussions of the dispute witnessed in yesterday’s session between Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Defense Minister Michel Mansi, against the background of preventing the latter from delivering a speech on behalf of the Lebanese army before the general assembly.
The repercussions of the dispute were reflected in today’s session, as the “Free Patriotic Movement” bloc withdrew in protest against not allowing the Minister of Defense to deliver his speech today as well, while the “Loyalty to the Resistance” bloc joined them, which left the hall before the start of the session.
As the session began, Representative Nabil Badr demanded that the observations made yesterday be followed, along with the Prime Minister’s amendments, and a vote on the general amnesty law as a whole, instead of voting on its articles separately.
On the other hand, Representative Alain Aoun responded that the law consists of eight articles, “which means that it will end quickly,” demanding that it be implemented article by article, especially since he has an objection to the second article.
In light of this debate, MP Bilal Abdullah intervened, saying: “We are not making such jokes. President Nawaf Salam imposed force on us on the basis that we enter and vote on the law.”
After this debate, the General Assembly began discussing the draft general amnesty law and voting on its articles, article by article.
The discussion ended with the adoption of the General Amnesty Law with amendments that were agreed upon by voting on it by a show of hands.
